What I do
Most of the time, my work life is pretty crazy. That's the thing about living in a deadline oriented profession is that you're always at the mercy of others for info, material, projects. Most of the time, said people have no clue about what it real takes to publish a brochure, catalog, etc. So, it lands in the hands of the designer to make it happen.Designing is only half the battle of getting something published. The other half lies in the hands of the printer. I'm extraordinarily blessed with a wonderful printer that I can not only do a great job, but that I can trust they're giving me the best price. However, as great as any printer is, it's still up to the designer to make sure that the output is exactly what it should be. Which is what I spent most my weekend doing...
Currently, I have 6 catalogs at press right now. These 6 documents represent some 2100 pages of material. Now, I don't look at every press sheet that comes off, but I do look at a sampling to make sure the output is consistent. I thought I might offer a small look into all that.

This is the 840. A Mitsubishi Heavy Industries DD3000R 8 Color Press. It can run up to 40" wide press sheets at a speed of almost 13000 sheets an hour. With 8 color towers you can run one side 8 color, or perfect 4/4 two sides. It also has the in-line coating towers for varnishes and aqueous coatings.
This is all the support equipment that it takes to run.

The control console.

This is what happens when you have bad plates. It's not supposed to be cyan.

Heh, one bad sensor tripped every lockout in the press. Not good...
